Augmentin is an antibiotic in the class of drugs Augmentin belongs to a class of drugs called penicillins. Augmentin antibiotic is used to fight bacteria in the body. Augmentin is used to treat many different types of infections and viruses. Augmentin has a generic name of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium. Augmentin is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated organisms. Augmentin antibiotic may also be used for other purposes.
Augmentin comes as a capsule, liquid, chewable tablet, and pediatric drop to take orally. Augmentin is usually taken every 8 hours (three times a day). Augmentin is an antibiotic of the penicillin class of drug. It is highly effective against different bacteria such as Pneumococci, Streptococci, H. influenzae, N. gonorrhea, E. coli, and certain strains of Staphylococci. Chemically, it is very closely related to ampicillin and penicillin. Addition of clavulanic acid to amoxicillin in Augmentin increases the effectiveness of this antibiotic against many other bacteria types that are ordinarily resistant to amoxicillin alone. Augmentin might be effective against other types of bacteria besides above mentioned.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible, and take the rest of the daily doses at evenly spaced intervals. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the dose you missed and take the rest of the doses for the day as directed. Do not take a double dose of this antibiotic unless otherwise directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
